Recovery, Load Management & a New Addition to the Resilient Body Team
Two weeks ago, I shared a quick note about tweaking my back while squatting—nothing catastrophic, but enough to make me take a step back. I’m about 95% better now (thank you, consistent care and smarter choices), but that little incident was a powerful reminder: if you want to train for life, you can’t treat every gym session like a battlefield.
What really stood out to me wasn’t just the tweak—it was how my body wasn’t bouncing back like it normally does. I’d also been sick recently, and while getting sick happens, the recovery felt slower than usual. Why? Because recovery isn’t just about sleep or taking a day off. It’s about understanding and managing your total stress load—from training, work, life, and everything in between. I had a lot going on!
Your body doesn’t separate stress from the barbell vs. stress from that long meeting or poor sleep. It all pulls from the same bank account—what’s often referred to as your allostatic load (aka your body's total stress burden). When that bank gets overdrawn, performance dips, recovery slows, and little tweaks show up more easily.
This is why load management is crucial—not just how much you’re lifting, but how well you’re recovering from it all. Good nutrition, quality sleep, mental recovery, and yes—targeted therapeutic interventions—can all help you manage that load better. These things don’t just get you back to baseline—they give you an edge when you’re already doing the right things.
