Downtime: How Slowing Down Can Keep You Moving Forward
It’s no secret that I tend to have a hard time slowing down. Whether it's work, the gym, or all the other obligations that stack up, I’m always on the move. But as much as I thrive on staying active, I’ve been reminded lately of the importance of taking some downtime — especially with family and loved ones.
Earlier this year, we also wrote about finding balance in several key areas to see the complete scope of wellness. If you missed that, you can check that out here.
The recent arrival of my daughter Kira has been a beautiful wake-up call. Her presence has shifted my perspective, grounding me in the realization that no matter how busy life gets, taking time to connect with the people we love is what truly centers us. It’s not just about recharging the body; it’s about resetting the mind and remembering why we do what we do. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle, but moments with family remind me why health and fitness are so important to me in the first place — it’s about being well for the people who matter most.
My wife’s own journey in fitness is an incredible example. Her quick recovery post-baby is proof of just how resilient and powerful our bodies are when we take care of them. It’s inspiring and humbling to witness up close. 48 hours later, out at coffee and feeling pretty good.
So if you’re like me and you find it hard to decelerate, I encourage you to pause and think about what area of your life might be out of balance right now. Whether it’s work, stress, or even your workout routine, see what you can do this week to slow down and reconnect. You might just find that in taking a break, you rediscover what truly keeps you going.
Here are 3 quick tips to find pause and reconnect:
Schedule it in: Treat downtime like any other important commitment. Block off time on your calendar for family, rest, or self-reflection, and guard it.
Unplug: Try setting aside even 20-30 minutes a day to turn off your phone, computer, and distractions. Use that time to be fully present with yourself or those around you.
Move mindfully: If you’re someone who likes to stay active, slow down with activities like yoga, stretching, or even a gentle walk. This way, you’re still moving, but with intention and calm.
Finding balance doesn’t mean stopping altogether — it just means making space for what truly matters.
We will return next week to talk about micronutrients and why they are worth thinking about with regard to your best health.
